City of Refuge

"These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them: that every one that killeth any person unawares may flee thither." Numbers‬ ‭35:15‬ ‭KJV

Throughout the Israelites' long journey in the wilderness, the Lord constantly gave them specific instructions on what to do once they arrived at the promised land, Canaan. After defeating their enemies, God told Moses exactly how to divide the land for their inheritance. Amongst the divisions were what God called "cities of refuge.

The cities of refuge were set apart in order to protect sinners. Anybody who accidentally murdered someone would have this place to flee to. These cities represent Jesus Christ, where sinners are forgiven and restored. God has called us to be those cities of refuge today for the sick, for the poor, and for sinners who are lost. Instead of judging and criticizing others' behaviors or outcasting them, open up your arms and let them come to the city of refuge in you! You are a lighthouse and a safe place for them. The world is full of hatred and judgement, and there’s rarely anywhere to go and feel totally accepted other than in our Savior, Jesus Christ. Today, let your light shine and show them how it’s done in God’s way!

~ Father, thank You for being my refuge. In You I know I can be my true self without feeling judged. Please help me to love someone else and offer them the same refuge You have offered me. In Jesus’ Name Amen.
